Legacy Accounts
Memorial profiles that ensure deceased family members are never forgotten — preserved in the family tree forever.
What are Legacy Accounts?
A Legacy Account is a memorial profile on A2Me for a family member who has passed away. It preserves their place in the family tree and serves as a shared space where living family members can add memories, photographs, stories, and tributes.
Legacy Accounts maintain all family tree connections — children, parents, siblings, and partners — ensuring the family structure remains complete across generations. A designated family member manages the profile's biographical details, while any connected family member can contribute memories.
When a Legacy Account is created, the death date is recorded and birthday celebrations transition to memorial dates. The family receives a notification on that date to remember and honor their loved one. If the deceased had an active A2Me account, it can be converted to Legacy status, preserving all existing content.
Why It Matters
When a family member dies, their memory often fragments. Photos are scattered across different relatives' homes. Stories exist only in the minds of people who knew them. For children born after their passing, they become just a name with no context.
Legacy Accounts create a centralized, permanent memorial that the whole family contributes to. Great-grandchildren can see where their great-grandmother fits in the family tree, read stories written by people who knew her, and view photos contributed by multiple family members. The memory stays alive and grows richer over time.
How It Works
- 1
Create or convert the account
Create a new Legacy Account for a deceased relative, or convert an existing A2Me account to Legacy status. Add their name, birth date, death date, and a profile photo.
- 2
Connect to the family tree
Define their relationships — parents, children, siblings, partners. The Legacy Account takes its proper place in the family tree, maintaining the complete family structure.
- 3
Family contributes memories
Living family members add photos, written memories, stories, and tributes. Each contribution is attributed to the person who shared it, building a collective memorial.
- 4
Memorial dates and remembrance
On the anniversary of their birthday or passing, the family receives a notification to remember them. The profile serves as a permanent place to visit and reflect.
Example Usage
Scenario: Grandpa Earl passed away in 2019, before A2Me existed. His family wants to include him in their family tree.
His daughter Maria creates a Legacy Account for Earl. She adds his photo, birth and death dates, and connects him as the father of her and her siblings, and as the partner of Grandma Rose (who has a living A2Me account).
Over the following weeks, family members contribute: Maria uploads Earl's military photo. His son David writes about their fishing trips. A grandchild shares a video from a family reunion where Earl told his famous story about the 1960s.
Now 8-year-old Jayden, who never met Grandpa Earl, can open the family tree, see exactly how Earl is related to him (great-grandfather), browse photos, read stories, and understand who this person was in the family's history.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Legacy Account?
A Legacy Account is a memorial profile for a deceased family member on A2Me. It preserves their place in the family tree and serves as a space where living family members can add memories, photos, stories, and tributes.
Who can create a Legacy Account?
Any family member on A2Me can create a Legacy Account for a deceased relative. The creator becomes the designated manager of that account. If the deceased person had an active A2Me account, their profile can be converted to a Legacy Account by the designated family manager.
What happens to birthday celebrations for Legacy Accounts?
When an account is converted to Legacy status, their birthday date is retained but birthday celebrations become memorial dates. The family receives a notification on that date to remember and honor their loved one, rather than a birthday card prompt.
Can multiple family members contribute to a Legacy Account?
Yes. While only the designated manager can edit profile details, any connected family member can add memories, photos, stories, and tributes to the Legacy Account. This allows the whole family to collectively preserve their loved one's memory.
Does the Legacy Account appear in the Family Tree?
Yes. Legacy Accounts maintain their position in the family tree exactly as they would if the person were alive. This ensures the family structure remains complete and younger generations can understand their full family history and relationships.
Can I add historical information to a Legacy Account?
Yes. You can add biographical information, life dates, photographs, written memories, and stories. Legacy Accounts are designed to hold both factual biographical data and personal memories shared by family members who knew them.
